Washington beat Lake Wylie at Nationals Park, escaping with a 5-4 win. The win in large part was due to catcher Shane Verd. He was 2 for 3 with a home run, while adding 5 RBI and scoring once. Jose Rosales got the win, improving to 2-1. He worked 7 innings, giving up 2 runs on 6 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 2. Lake Wylie now has a record of 21-11.

Verd had a timely hit for Washington in the bottom of the seventh. With Washington trailing 2-1, he turned a first pitch fastball into a grand slam home run. It was his 7th home run of the season, making it 5-2, Washington.

"We've got guys willing to do what it takes to win," Verd told the Washington News.
