de Jesus 5-for-8 for Kansas City
|
Gustavo de Jesus was on quite a roll as he knocked the ball all over Kauffman Stadium, collecting 5 hits. His day of glory wasn't able to win the game, however. The Seattle Mariners got the 14-8 victory over the Kansas City Royals.
"I never realized that a few hits could cause so much commotion," the second baseman said in the clubhouse after the game, crowded by reporters. "Headlines and highlights are great, but it takes a lot of luster off it that we lost."
After his first couple of hits, all eyes in the ballpark were on him each time de Jesus stepped into the batter's box. Even some opposing fans were pulling for him, knowing they were watching a little slice of league history unfold.
When asked what the secret of hitting so well is, he smiled and said "relax, concentrate, and hit the ball where they ain't."
That's exactly what he did, as de Jesus finished the game with 5 hits in 8 at-bats and a line in the record book. Gustavo de Jesus singled in the 1st, flied out in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, hit a solo-shot off Austin Hanson in the 6th, hit an RBI triple in the 8th, flied out in the 10th, singled in the 12th and flied out in the 14th.
This year, de Jesus is hitting .318 with 100 hits, 18 home runs, 50 RBIs and has scored 58 runs.
